Russian payday lenders and clever advertisements

Continuing on my theme of Russian retailers listing their nearest metro station in their advertising, when riding the Nizhny Novgorod Metro I found another interesting advertisement – this time for a payday lender called «Нано-Финанс» (Nano Finance).

The first thing I noticed was the diagram on the left hand side – a copy of the official Nizhny Novgorod Metro network map.

It was my girlfriend who noticed the second interesting element – on the network map, every station name had been replaced with a reason to borrow money. Here is a selection:

  • свадьба
  • автомобиль
  • ремонт
  • мебели
  • шуба
  • фитнес
  • телевизор

Which translate to:

  • wedding
  • car
  • renovation
  • furniture
  • fur coat
  • fitness
  • television

This provides a little insight into Russian culture – apparently buying a fur coat or a big wedding with borrowed money isn’t considered outlandish!
